Day 30 – Hiking Day 26 –
Thursday October 5 2017
Caledon Section K16.0
Willoughby Road to Toronto Section 38.7 Walking Fern Side Trail
Distance – 27.37 k
Time - 7:15
Somehow we managed an earlier start today at 8:30 a.m. The trail didn’t let us down. It was varied
and beautiful. We started out with some quite nice trail, and a walk through
the streets of the little community of Brimstone. Then we entered the Forks of
the Credit Provincial Park. I have always wanted to see “the Forks of the
Credit” and was excited to do so, but we ended up walking out of the
park and realized we hadn’t seen the falls or the forks! So much for all the
hype. From there our peaceful morning changed dramatically. We had a huge,
long, steep climb up to the top of the escarpment. Very shortly after that we
entered the area of the Devil’s Pulpit where we had a steep climb up the face
of the rock on steps cut into the rock….and a chain up the side to help you get
up. I had been a little worried about this area, but it really wasn’t nearly as
bad as I had imagined. From that point, the walk was fairly easy. We had quite
a bit of road work, but most of that was on picturesque country roads, usually
dirt, alongside farmland, and many beautiful properties and homes. We walked
through amazing forests of ash, apple, and hawthorn, through meadowland and farmers’ field, across
rivers, and true to the Bruce, plenty of ups and down! We also did quite a bit
of walking on the Caledon Trailway. I remembered this “trailway” from about 10
years ago when Ray and I did a long run on it with Sage, Alanna’s dog at the
time. It is a narrow path along the line of an old railway.
We were supposed to meet Tam and Angus who were walking
towards us from our finish point, but never did manage to do that! Somehow they
were kidnapped by “blue trail blazes” instead of the main trail “white” blazes.
Nonetheless, they had a great walk with Hannah, and we all met up at their car
around 4:30 by the side of a beautiful lake. We said goodbye to Hannah and the
four of us, Tam, Angus, Robin and I headed off to the Mono Cliff Inn. Here we
met other friends from Uxbridge, Jabette and Brett, and spent a lovely evening
eating delicious food before heading back to the B & B and bed.
Update from Robin: Haha Bruce. Gnarly bits again. Reminding us to watch our footing. I'm just glad we were going up this not down.
