Day 28 – Rest Day 4 – Tuesday
October 3 2017
Of course the opportunity to sleep in means being awake at 6:00 a.m.
anticipating the 6:30 wake up call! We pushed it through to 7:30 and 8:00! Had
some of Sandy’s delicious muffins and granola, fruit, and yoghourt, and coffee.
Nestled into the Hockley Valley, Farmer’s Walk Bed and Breakfast is a
delightfully colourful and relaxing nook on our journey. Sandy has used her art
and design skills of colour and texture to create an innovative décor in all
the rooms of the B & B. Her love of colour is also continued in the garden
where flower beds, bushes and trees decorate the country acres. Her two
Australian Shepherd dogs, Megs and Annie, welcome you with sloppy licks, and
loud helloes!
Suzanne Dube, a local social worker who sees a need in the area for
driving seniours and youth to and from locations safely, and cost effectively, came
to take us into Orangeville at 11:30, so it was a relaxing morning. We went to
Mochaberry’s on Broadway for a latte, and sat for a while outside in the sun
until chased in by the wasps.
Orangeville has a population of 27,000. It has an Ontario small town main
street with boutique shops, and of course an area with car dealerships, and
another with the “chains”! We visited “Fromage” on Mill Street for some cheese
for our lunches, and walked down First Street to “Forage” for lunch and a
takeout for dinner tonight. Suzanne picked us up around 2:30 and it was back to
The Farmers’ Walk to relax for the afternoon and catch up with our
communications.
We have now walked 620.72 k in 24 days of hiking. When we did our body
check this morning, we were pretty pleased with the way they are reacting.
Feet, I think, will always be our primary concern, as you can get a friction
spot anytime which could develop into a blister; at this point, we are blister
free!! Our muscles are feeling stronger, and our spirits are high, and now we
can see the end in sight with twelve walks left! Yikes!! It will soon be over!!
What will we do next? Our friends Lari and Hedley are hoping to see snow
falling – something Lari has never seen! We on the other-hand are hoping for
sunshine!! Tomorrow threatens thunderstorms!
Update from Robin: We have now completed 24 hiking days and 620.72 kilometres. About 300 to go. We are enjoying a rest day at the lovely Farmer's Walk B&B near Orangeville. I think we have our trail legs now, although 7 hours of hill training on the trail yesterday tested them. And just when we think the gnarly bits are behind us (the northern parts of the trail are tough, and the footing over the last week has been much better), the Bruce takes us up and down the face of the escarpment. We have been so fortunate with the weather, but it is calling for rain tomorrow and possible thunderstorms. Oh well. We have a schedule to keep, and keep it we will!!
