Day 19 – Hiking Day 17 – Sunday
September 24 2017
Beaver Valley K56.2 Eugenia Falls to K33.3 9th Sideroad, Duncan
Distance – 23.73k
We had a shorter distance to hike today and just as well. Central Ontario is experiencing a heat wave! The temperature was something like 33 and goodness knows what the “feels like” was….somewhere up around 40 I’d say. Fortunately, the majority of the hike was in the trees but we did have about 4k or so on the hot roads. I don’t think there was anything that really distinguished the scenery except some of the views over the Beaver Valley were gorgeous. We could look over the Valley and see where we had travelled yesterday which was kind of fun.
We came across some white towers that flummoxed us as to what they were. We have discovered that they are the "surge" towers for the OPP Eugenia Generating Station which has supplied renewable electricity to the Province of Ontario for over 100 years.
We were delighted today to meet Peter on the trail. Robin’s husband
drove up, parked at the trail end, and hiked in to meet us. We had about 6 or 7
k left when we met him. It always eases those last few kilometers when people
join you.
In the evening we had dinner at The Dam Pub in Thornbury with Lari and
Hedley, the Australian couple we met up at the Lionheart in Lions Bay, and Ken
and Margaret from Thornbury, all of whom are hiking the Bruce.
The highlight of the day was the tape that Sherry brought to us. It is
called “hypafix“ and is a protective tape to
put over blisters. So, when you feel something rubbing on your feet, you just
cut a piece and strap it over the rubbed area and it prevents blisters forming.
It is truly a miracle tape. We have been using several brands that we bought in
the drug store but nothing compares with this! Sherry bought it at Starkman Medical Supplies on Bathurst in Toronto.
